I wasn’t planning to write anything new this week. Then an idea showed up while I was watching something, and it wouldn’t go away.

Where It Started

I was watching something the other evening when a cute little idea popped into my head. It wasn’t a big idea, but it was stubborn enough that I stopped what I was doing and wrote it down.

I didn’t have a plan. I didn’t know who these people were or where the story might end up. All I had was a moment: two people meeting, and one of them feeling like she should know the other.

So I wondered what would happen if I just wrote that moment out and saw where it went.

The First Scene

Here’s what came out. It’s rough, and I’m sharing it anyway.

“Oh, thank you,” Shianna said, reaching for her dropped book.

The knight who handed it to her smiled and nodded. He hadn’t spoken yet, but something about his green eyes tugged at her for a second—like a name she almost knew but couldn’t quite catch. Everything else was unfamiliar: the square jaw, the curly brown hair, the dimples that appeared when he smiled.

“Confused by what you see, ma’am?” he asked. A playful grin flashed across his face, and she couldn’t help smiling back.

“Oh, have we met before? I feel like I’ve seen you before, but I just can’t place you.”

“My name is Ardock, if that can help you remember. Have we met before?” He cocked his head.

The name meant nothing. She waited a beat, hoping it might spark something, but it didn’t.

“Shianna, of House Monroe. I guess we haven’t. You must just look like someone I know.”

Something very brief passed over his face—gone almost before she noticed it.

I wonder how much can hide in a second like that.

Where It Goes From Here

Honestly, I don’t know. Maybe it will turn into something, and maybe it will stay a fun little idea I wrote down one evening.

What I do know is that it’s been fun. I’ve loved seeing what it turns into.

It reminds me of the Five-Minute Writing Challenge. You don’t need a perfect opening or a finished plan. You just notice something and write the first thing that comes to mind. Then you see where it takes you.

Not every idea needs to become something. Sometimes it’s enough to follow it for a little while and enjoy the walk.

Have you ever had an idea like this, one that showed up out of nowhere? I wonder what you did with it. Tell me about it in the comments.
